The Journey

The World’s Captains and Residents collectively determine the Ship’s yearly itinerary based on the best sea routes and Residents’ personal interests. Itineraries are determined three years in advance by a community-wide vote. Continuous worldwide journeys, with a focus on extended stays of an average three days in port, ensure that Residents have sufficient time to explore their favorite destinations. Unlike most vessels, The World spends nearly twice as many days in port as at sea. Every few days Residents wake up to look outside their window at a new and exciting port of call.

The Beginning

The vision behind The World was to create a way in which travelers never had to disembark. They could sail for as long as they wished from the comfort of their own private Residence. As such, in 1997 a team of experienced professionals gathered and began working on the first ever vessel where people could travel the globe without leaving home. Construction of the vessel began in May 2000 in Rissa, Norway and in March 2002 the vision was realized when The World set sail from Oslo with its inaugural Residents and Crew on board. Her maiden voyage departed from Lisbon, Portugal on 2 May 2002 and on 17 May 2002 she was christened in Venice, Italy. On 30 September 2003, the Residents purchased the Ship, and in June 2006, the original inventory of Residences was sold out.

Ship Designers

Petter Yran and Bjørn Storbraaten designed The World. This Oslo-based team successfully combined nautical elements with clean, contemporary lines, imparting the aura of a private yacht to this magnificent 12-deck Ship, while enhancing an intimacy with the sea that is not available on land.

Environmental Interests

The World is the first Ship of its size designed to burn marine diesel oil rather than heavy bunker fuel, making for a much more environmentally friendly Ship. The World now burns only low sulfur marine gas oil which meets the strictest international and local regulations thus allowing the vessel to call in areas where ships burning heavy fuel are banned. The World was also the first Ship to feature the unique Scanship wastewater cleaning system in which wastes are filtered by means of a flotation system. It was supplemented in 2016 with a Wartsila membrane bioreactor treatment system to meet the present wastewater discharge standards. The team on board is constantly identifying new and innovative elements to improve the Ship’s environmental footprint such as:

 • An initiative to reduce single-use plastics includes providing water bottle refill stations and replacing single-use plastics with biodegradable products, i.e., food containers, cutlery, cups, etc.
 • A reduction in the Ship’s carbon footprint is achieved by purchasing locally as much as possible as well as increased procurement of organic products such as food items and bath amenities.
 • Implementing LED (light-emitting diode) technology throughout the Ship and replacing existing high wattage halogen and incandescent lamps with the latest and more efficient LED lighting technology to reduce energy consumption.
 • A dedicated Environmental Engineer is responsible for the prevention of environmental incidents and overall adherence to the Ship’s Environmental Management System including training of all crew members. A Health, Safety, and Environmental Officer focuses on working standards as well as the growing environmental regulations.

The post The Distinct Advantages of Owning a Residence on The World Versus a Traditional Yacht appeared first on The World.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA – Thrilling global exploration and enrichment, being part of an exclusive community of 200 like-minded adventure seekers, and a matchless lifestyle that eliminates many yacht ownership challenges define the degrees of difference between purchasing a private Residence on The World, the largest privately owned residential yacht on earth, and mega-yachts appealing to a sophisticated and affluent audience.

Ownership Advantages Abound

For those looking to purchase a yacht to travel around the world, this 644-ft / 196-m Ship is the perfect alternative to individual yacht ownership, offering unsurpassed services and facilities one could not achieve on their own. Common yacht ownership challenges are eliminated with services such as turnkey staffing and logistics and itinerary planning to destinations all over the world – all with outstanding personalized service. Other advantages include reduced costs, since fees associated with maintaining extravagant super yachts are typically overlooked, particularly with respect to general upkeep and fuel, crew and guests, and berthing and dockage.

Yacht Costs Compared to The World

The World offers one-of-a-kind experiences to remote, exotic and well-known locales around the globe, that although possible for a private yacht, would likely be cost prohibitive and inefficient based on logistics, security considerations, and fuel and other transportation expenses. Typically, maintenance and fuel account for nearly 50 percent of all annual expenditures. Additionally, the number of staff required for a yacht (beyond the captain and chief engineer) increases with the size of the vessel and can include the captain’s mate, bosun, deckhands, stewards and engineers. Therefore, an expanded staff means higher monthly and annual expenditures. Costs tend to rise as guests stay on board and utilize the yacht’s services.

Docking and moorage fees are also a consideration. Costs fluctuate based on the number of days the vessel is transient at a location other than its permanent moorage. In addition, few marinas offer permanent docking for these elaborate craft.

The World provides a more cost-efficient opportunity allowing Residents to be free of the hassles of yacht ownership so their time can be better spent discovering the rewarding lifestyle of circumnavigating the planet, the unparalleled cultural experiences, and the deep and enriching sense of community Residents develop with fellow Residents.

Annual Maintenance Fees for The World

A yachtsman’s annual bill is in stark contrast to that of The World’s Residents where the cost structure is more streamlined. Beyond the initial outlay for a Residence, there are annual ownership fees based on the Residence’s square footage. These fees include a Resident’s share of Ship preservation, operations, and crew compensation.

Bringing The Destinations Alive

With a continuous worldwide Journey that enables The World to span the globe every two-to-three years, the Ship is a complete floating city, equipped with high-end facilities and luxurious amenities that create an intimate, refined atmosphere. This exclusive community offers the ultimate combination of luxury travel with world-class dining, custom destination experiences, and enriching cultural events like renowned guest speakers, local dancers, and art exhibitions that ‘bring the destinations alive.’

The Ship’s one-of-a-kind expeditions include a history-making and record-breaking 24-day transit in 2012 of Canada’s Northwest Passage ocean to ocean (Pacific to Atlantic) and returning to this historic sea route in 2019 to complete a double transit sailing from east to west; an extraordinary journey to the White Sea and the seldom visited Russian Arctic National Park; a relaxed sojourn to Melanesia and its 80 islands with a focus on the tropical green paradise of Vanuatu; a voyage across the vast Pacific to Polynesia to discover its remote and mystical islands, tiny specks of land with villages rarely visited by outsiders; and many more.

Through its carefully crafted Journeys, The World tempts the explorer mindset of Residents who have chosen to discover the treasures of the globe together with the other 150 families who call this distinctive community-at-sea ‘home.’ The extraordinary experiences are endless, such as spotting over 100 polar bears on Wrangel Island in Russia’s high Arctic; retracing the steps of Sir Ernest Shackelton’s epic hike to Stromness on South Georgia Island in the South Atlantic Ocean; and soaring by helicopter over Greenland’s glaciers and fjords, untouched for thousands of years and rounding a glacier by Zodiac to be greeted with a glass of champagne.

Another benefit of owning on The World is the extraordinary gastronomic offerings that far exceed what’s available on a traditional yacht – four diverse restaurants, award-winning chefs, gourmet deli, wine cellar with a capacity for 16,000 bottles, celebrity guest chefs, world-renown winemaker visits and exclusive tastings, and the “Call-A-Chef™” program where meals are prepared in the privacy of an owner’s Residence by one of the Ship’s talented chefs for an intimate dining experience or special dinner party.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA – We all have our daily routine – business appointments, investment decisions, social and charitable engagements. A frenetic pace that sometimes seems to be controlling us instead of the other way around. Even retreating to our weekend home requires planning and effort.

Imagine a vacation home where everything is taken care of; a sanctuary where your every whim is known. Instead of returning to the same address, you’re on an infinite voyage around the world to its most exotic ports of call. Whether you’re anchoring off the coast of St. Barts and gazing at the rainforest, enjoying a sunset camel safari in Australia, or marching alongside king penguins in Antarctica, you can be as active or as tranquil as you like. This is the lifestyle aboard The World, the largest privately owned, residential yacht on earth.

The World is home to only 150 families. Hailing primarily from the United States, Canada, Europe, South Africa, Asia and Australia, Residents share a sense of adventure, freedom and exploration. Home is one of 165 bespoke private residences on a one-of-a-kind Ship that sails nonstop to the most breathtaking destinations imaginable – a different locale every few days. This exclusive community offers the ultimate combination of luxury travel with world-class dining, custom destination experiences and enriching cultural events. Extraordinary experiences are the norm. Like dining at acclaimed Spanish Chef Ferran Adria’s three Michelin star elBulli before it closed its doors, enjoying the running of the bulls in a private Pamplona apartment, or savoring champagne and caviar atop an Antarctic glacier after arriving by private helicopter.

Luxury is Knowing Our Residents’ Personal Preferences

It’s all about knowing Residents’ personal preferences and delivering the highest levels of service. On The World luxury is getting what you want, when you want it, without having to ask for it – and not even knowing you wanted it. It’s a sommelier who knows every Resident’s wine preferences or a housekeeper who knows how a family likes their refrigerator stocked each time they return to the Ship, not to mention their favorite flowers brilliantly displayed in the foyer.

Bringing the Destinations Alive

Luxury is customized, exclusive and authentic experiences that money can’t buy. The World’s crew ‘bring the destinations alive’ in countless ways through one-of-a-kind events like watching Melanesia’s Pentacost land divers perform a centuries old custom of jumping from wooden platforms with vine-wrapped ankles; sailing Canada’s Northwest Passage, a record-breaking voyage, while a mother Polar bear and her cub gaze at you from a nearby ice floe; enjoying the Resident band “Fabulous Fossils” perform cliff-side in Greenland from an assemblage of Zodiacs and kayaks floating in the sea below; playing golf in the Antarctic snow after retracing Sir Ernest Shackleton’s historic steps or swimming across the equator off Africa’s west coast joined by a pod of 30-50 pilot whales, the Ship’s horn marking the exact moment.

Food and Wine

Dining ranges in style, ambiance, and presentation; from Asian to Mediterranean and deli to haute cuisine. Portraits, considered by many to be among the finest restaurants on earth, is the ultimate gastronomic experience. The Ship’s wine cellar has a capacity of 15,000 bottles, many collected in local ports by its certified Sommelier Team or from winemakers who come aboard to lecture and host tastings.

An impressive 1,200 hand-picked selections from 20 countries, including an extensive sake selection of 34 labels and a top tier spirits selection of over 300 labels, completes the Ship’s offering. Looking to entertain or for a romantic dinner at home? The Call-a-Chef™ program offers private chef service in your Residence. There is no need to remind the wait staff how you like your beef prepared. The onboard team knows your preferences, from how you like your steak cooked to special dietary requirements.

Beyond The World’s dining options, the culinary experiences ashore are endless. Whether you’re in the mood to stroll to an Amsterdam café or take a limo to a Bordeaux chateau for a five-course meal, The World Concierge will make all the arrangements, including after-dinner entertainment and your transfer back to the Ship for a nightcap before bed.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA – Residents of The World, the largest privately owned residential yacht on Earth, are treated to unique and enriching experiences that bring alive the destinations on the Ship’s global journey. Through an intriguing and carefully crafted program of activities, lectures, workshops, entertainment and special events, The World tempts the ‘explorer’ mindset of Residents who have chosen to discover the cultural and geographic treasures of the world together with the families who call this distinctive community-at-sea ‘home.’

Nobel Laureates, Visiting Experts, Breakfast Forums and Workshops Offers Interactive Immersion

Founded on Residents’ and Guests’ thirst for knowledge and inquisitive nature, onboard lectures (ideal for days at sea) are held to educate individuals and discuss topics pertinent to the countries and cities visited. Professional and experienced speakers, often locally based, talk on a variety of topics including arts and culture, history, finance, economy, world affairs and politics, food and wine, photography, health and wellness, science, space, and more. Lecturer-hosted outings held ashore provide interactive experiences that further Residents’ immersion into the topic.

The World’s Nobel Laureate Lecture Series brings esteemed Nobel Prize Laureates to the Ship to lecture on topics in their respective fields such as medicine, economics and science. Program speakers have included Dr. Shuji Nakamura, recipient of the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics for inventing the blue LED (light-emitting diode), Dr. Edvard Moser, a 2014 Nobel Prize winner in Physiology and Medicine who lectured on the brain’s maps of space, and Dr. Brian K. Kobilka, a 2012 joint Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry who spoke on G Protein Coupled Receptors: The Body’s Communication Network and Challenges in Drug Discovery.

Breakfast Forums are more informal round table conversations that offer an intimate and casual setting in which to discuss important issues with local experts and dignitaries. Areas of focus have included politics and government, the economic future, finance and business, and the arts.

Interactive workshops hosted by professionals are matched to Residents’ particular interest areas in group or one-on-one sessions. Subjects include computers, photography, journaling, cooking, painting, wine education, dance and health and fitness.

Exploring Dynamic Cultures

To drive Residents’ sense of cultural adventure there are shows featuring local dance groups, indigenous music and local activities that embody a destination’s authenticity and allure. Whether it is salsa dancing in Puerto Rico, colorfully dressed Panamanian school children singing, classical Indian dance or authentic tango dancers performing en route to Buenos Aires, these onboard experiences open a window into the rich tapestry of traditions throughout the world.

For added enrichment at their own pace, Residents can watch films and documentaries (usually destination-themed) in the Colosseo theater and explore the collection of books, magazines, and DVDs in The Study. The selection of books, including biography, fiction, non-fiction, children’s, travel guides, and destination-specific titles – continuously changes according to the Ship’s itinerary.

Remarkable Expeditions

Expeditions amaze participants with a comprehensive exploration of an area. An expedition team of approximately 10 – 12 regional experts are brought on board. Their breadth of knowledge is unparalleled, and along with the onboard staff, create an extraordinary experience. Over the years, a wide variety of expeditions has taken Residents to the far corners of the globe.

 • 2009: visited the Bering Sea and Russian Arctic sighting more Polar bears (119) than any other Ship of its type.
 • 2010: completed a 10-day expedition to Greenland and sailed to the ice-encrusted desert of Antarctica.

 • 2018: undertook an 11-day expedition through the Svalbard Archipelago to view spectacular arctic wildlife and the majestic polar bear.
 • 2019: traversed 3,500 miles across the northern coastline of Canada and Alaska. Having been the largest passenger Ship to sail the Northwest Passage from west to east in 2012, The World returned to the High Arctic to accomplish a ‘double transit’ sailing from east to west. Residents also enjoyed the arid desert coasts, lush forests, and mangrove-lined rivers of Madagascar, one of the most biodiverse islands on the planet.
 • 2020: Residents discovered West Papua in Indonesia and its incredible, vibrant green eco-systems.

Undersea Adventures

A Dive & Snorkel Program is planned around opportunities in the itinerary and staffed by qualified Dive Masters. Professional and licensed drivers lead Residents & Guests on Zodiac adventures in remote locations not accessible by the Ship but where opportunities for exploration are possible.

Incredible Video on Demand and Broadcast TV

A daily TV program is produced on board which invites Residents & Guests to learn about the current port of call, visiting experts and activities planned for the day. Daily installments of the show, available in all Residences – plus tapings of lectures, destination videos and popular movies – run on The World’s Video on Demand (VOD) system, not to mention 70-plus broadcast television channels. It’s a unique TV system unheard of for a vessel of this kind.

Marina Day Pursuits

Special ‘Marina Days’ and ‘Beach Days’ allow Residents to enjoy water sports (such as Hobie Cat and Laser boat sailing and kayaking), water skiing, banana boating, Polar Plunges and lounging on sun-soaked shores for the afternoon. On these special days, the back wall of the Marina restaurant is lowered and serves as a multi-functional platform and ‘jumping off’ deck for sea-side play. Often a beach barbeque will be staged from the Ship with permission from local authorities.

Fresh is the Order of the Day

Creative Cocktails and Elite Spirits

The World’s Beverage Team styles its cocktails by applying the principles of modern mixology. Drinks are prepared with market-fresh, high-quality products and premium spirits primarily crafted by artisan distilleries. To enhance the flavor profile, delicate herbal and floral aromas are added by using homemade infusions. Sourcing local products is important, and the Beverage Team is on a constant quest to discover and incorporate unique local beverages, fruits, herbs and spices into drinks. Inspired by the Ship’s journey to Asia, the team created a cocktail menu reflecting the region’s exotic flavors and ingredients. Crafted sake, shochu and Japanese whiskies were used as base spirits, calamansi fruit replaced lemon and infusions with pandan, kaffir lime leaves and yuzu were used to transfer the essence of the destination into the glass. Tropical fruits such as avocado, guava, jack fruit java plum, longan, mango, mangosteen, papaya, soursop pomegranate, and sapodilla, were incorporated into smoothies. The flavors of the Peruvian Andes and Amazon were represented by aguyamanto, aguaje, lucuma, tuna and cocona fruits. New green drinks with bitter gourd, bottle gourd and various algae from the Asian markets were also developed to boost the immune system.

Cocktail Lounges and Bars

Residents can enjoy The World’s wines, spirits and a multitude of specialty beverages in numerous cocktail lounges and bars including the Cigar Club (featuring cigars from Cuba and Dominican Republic, premium rums, Scotch whiskies and cognacs), Lobby Bar, Marina Bar, Pool Bar, Regatta Bar, Quantum and Cove.

Wine Cellar and Wine Vaults at Sea

The World’s wine cellar has a capacity of 15,000 bottles. A certified Sommelier Team offers more than 1,200 hand-picked selections from 20 countries including an extensive sake selection of 34 labels, a contemporary cocktail program, and a top tier spirits selection of over 300 labels. The team is always on the lookout for off-the-radar elite wines and spirits. During the Ship’s travels, the Beverage Team has brought on small batches of gins from Japan and Australia, exclusive whiskies from Scotland and Japan, pisco from Peru, and small batch produced Cachaça from Brazil.

The Sommelier Team strives for the ultimate level of wine service. Every detail is considered, from perfect stemware to decanting tools and correct service temperatures. Each bottle on board is stored under temperature control. The main cellar consists of two wine rooms, one for red and one for white, which are maintained at preferred service temperatures, 18°C and 10°C respectively. Several custom-made wine vaults ensure appropriate wine storage in the Ship’s restaurants while the wines-by-the-glass program makes use of the Coravin Wine Preservation System and top champagnes offered by glass with Perlage preservation system. Residents and Guests can easily navigate the extensive wine list via iPads that offer detailed information about the wines.

Masterful Mixologists

The Ship hosts world-renowned bar professionals who share their knowledge and skills during mixology sessions. One of the world’s leading mixologists, Jeff “Beachbum” Berry, has revolutionized the art of the tiki cocktail and hosted mixing events for Residents and Guests. While travelling Peru, Johnny Schuler, also called “Mr. Pisco” and the mastermind behind Pisco Porton, lectured on their national beverage and initiated a visit to the oldest distillery in Peru. While calling on Cuba, renowned Miami bartender of Cuban origin, Julio Cabrera, hosted several events featuring the classic cocktails of the island nation. Award-winning author and whisky expert Dave Broom hosted a series of Scotch whisky tastings during the Ship’s exploration of the British Isles.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA – Residents of The World, Residences at Sea, are invited to immerse themselves in one-of-a-kind epicurean experiences. As the privately-owned mega yacht and home to 150 families from around the world circumnavigates the globe, it’s the only place on earth where food and wine connoisseurs can share one-of-a-kind delectable adventures, all from the comfort of home.

Imagine walking through centuries old Bordeaux vineyards alongside the award-winning winemaker who created the wines you will be tasting at an intimate dinner that evening, or immersing your senses as you join a Michelin-star chef at a local market to help pick out produce for a private master class. Those who enjoy what they sample in the vineyard can stock up, direct from terroir to their onboard cellar. On The World, all of this and more is possible.

Calling at more than 100 destinations annually, including top wine-producing regions and gastronomically rich ports, acclaimed chefs and winemakers are invited to come aboard to showcase their heritage and individual flair. They join the Ship’s onboard team in ‘bringing the destination alive’ for Residents and Guests through food and wine, a unique cultural experience.

Each of the families that call The World home have a host of expert sommeliers and chefs available around the clock, whether for private dining using local, market-fresh produce or assistance in purchasing specific vintages from vineyards.

Guest Chefs and Winemakers Aboard The World

Throughout its history, The World has played host to an impressive roll call of chefs and winemakers, including celebrated Chef Silvio Nickol of the historic Palais Coburg in Vienna; representatives from classic French Champagne house Fleury and acclaimed Portuguese winemakers Sandra Tavares da Silva and Jorge Serodio Borges, among others. Thanks to The World’s established relationships with many wineries, top vintners are invited on board to host tastings when travelling through wine-growing regions giving Residents a rare insight into winemaking philosophies and terroir, direct from the masters. The Ship has welcomed numerous guest chefs, winemakers, master distillers and mixologists, who share their knowledge, passion and skills by hosting dinners, master classes, tastings, and demonstrations.

Epicurean Expeditions

Alongside the impressive program of guest chefs and winemakers, The World also arranges visits to vineyards that are often closed to the public, as well as private dining at some of the world’s most sought-after restaurants. These trips are carefully curated, with The World’s expert team arranging only the most unique, one-of-a-kind experiences. Instead of dining in the main restaurant, Residents might enjoy an exclusive dinner at the chef’s table, with a private tour of the kitchens led personally by the head chef.

Shoreside highlights have included a duet of tours through Portugal’s Alto Douro wine region, commended by UNESCO as a “cultural landscape of outstanding beauty”, which has been producing port wine for over two millennia. Quinta de Pacheca, one of the region’s leading traditional wine estates, is reached via a scenic journey along the Douro River revealing terraced vineyards and rolling hills. Residents will tour the winery and sample ports and wines alongside a specially prepared lunch.

Thanks to their long-standing relationships with wine producers, The World’s Beverage Manager Kelley Schaefer and his team have the distinct advantage of arranging private events ashore for individual Residents with a particular interest. Previous highlights include Cape Town, South Africa (Ebon Sadie, Stark-Conde, Klein Constantia and De Toren), Sete, France (Chateau de Beaucastel in the Chateauneuf du Pape province), Bilbao, Spain (region of Rioja) and a visit to a world-class distillery in Oban, to discover the traditional art of whisky production.

Expert Advice On Board

The World is home to a team of highly accomplished chefs and certified sommeliers, giving Residents access to exceptional expert knowledge 24/7. Constantly striving for innovation and perfection, the Food & Beverage Team delights in creating exceptional experiences for Residents, both on board and ashore. From exploring neighborhood markets in search of the perfect local ingredients for a beach barbecue, to accompanying Residents on wine-buying missions at privately owned vineyards, to hosting Residents’ private tastings for wine, spirits, whisky, and cognac – the options are endless.

“The culinary team on The World has one of the most envious positions that chefs could ever dream of,” says Executive Chef Geoffrey Murray. “We have a continuous stream of markets from which to choose in the most wonderful locations on the planet. Every few days as the Ship sails the globe our choices are renewed. We ‘bring the destination alive’ gastronomically. In fact, our Residents encourage us to challenge ourselves by cooking unique and special products – direct from fisherman or forest, we bring them back and craft bespoke dining experiences. We create everlasting memories for our Residents and Guests that are only possible on The World. It’s the true definition of luxury.”

With a capacity of 15,000 bottles and more than 1,200 hand-picked selections from 19 countries, a contemporary cocktail program, and a top tier spirits selection of over 300 labels, The World’s wine selection rivals most shoreside cellars. While The World sails the globe, Mr. Schaefer and his well-connected and knowledgeable team of sommeliers use the opportunity to explore various wine regions. They personally visit wineries to purchase the rarest and most sought-after wines, often produced in miniscule quantities and seldom available to purchase through traditional wine merchants.

“There are no limitations set by our Residents regarding the wines we select for them,” says Mr. Schaefer. “We have absolute freedom to choose the wines and have many exceptional bottles currently in the cellar. The rarest are Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 1961 and Château La Tour Blanche, Sauternes 1941. Our Beverage Team ensures Residents’ favorites are always stocked.”

The strength of The World’s wine list is its diversity and exclusivity. Comparing its collection to a land-based Michelin star restaurant shows clear advantages for the Ship. “We buy most of our wines locally in the regions of production,” Mr. Schefer added. “Based on our journey, we visit every wine country or region at least every two years. We have developed lasting relationships with a lot of wineries around the globe. Many of the greatest wines we carry are produced in very small amounts and are not widely distributed. Several have iconic status and are made available to us by the wineries. Our playground is the whole planet.”

The World has been awarded two prestigious accolades in the respected The World of Fine Wine magazine’s World’s Best Wine Lists for nine consecutive years, receiving three stars, the highest possible, and leading its category as Best Ship Wine List. The World’s celebrated wine list is described as having “an amazing commitment to diversity.”

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA – Elevating exquisite design and gastronomic experiences to ‘best-of-the-best’ standards is Portraits on The World, serving haute cuisine on the largest, privately owned residential yacht on earth. The sophisticated Art Deco-inspired interior design and intimate ambiance reflects the masterfully prepared creative cuisine that makes Residents of The World regard Portraits as one of the best restaurants around the globe. Nowhere else can one enjoy such an amazing gastronomic experience – from the comfort of their own home – while continuously traveling around the world to its most exotic destinations. It’s a lifestyle like no other for those with a thirst for knowledge, adventure, and of course, the finest cuisine.

A Stylish & Timeless Vision

Portraits’ interior was designed by Miami, Florida-based PMAA, an award-winning architectural interior design firm headed by Philip Martin. The architectural direction accommodates the desired functional and aesthetic requirements established by the Resident community. All finishes, furniture, ceiling and lighting design, window treatments, integration of service elements and sound support its design concept.

The romantic venue conveys the feeling of being on an intimate private yacht, embodying a modern take on the Art Deco period. It exudes ‘cool chic’ and ‘timeless elegance’ through custom furnishings and artwork, the use of bold geometric patterns and a striking color palette of blacks, whites and metallics, which are design references of the period. Reference to the Art Deco period was inspired by Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann, father of the Art Deco movement in France.

‘Custom’ is Key to Design Concept

Further distinguishing Portraits’ interior design from restaurants around the world is the use of custom furnishings throughout the space including:

 • A polished stainless steel and glass wine vault with a capacity of 1,800 bottles (with three temperature zones for reds, whites and champagnes) to showcase the vast beverage collection – featured wines are displayed on their sides with labels showing outward on the back of each door panel.
 • Seating by Douglas Hutton of Hutton Home – ebony-framed chairs with leather back panel, lounge chairs in the entry covered in charcoal mohair, and sateen-upholstered ebony-finished bar stools in the pre-function area.
 • Expandable dining tables from Italy with a polished, stainless steel pedestal design.
 • Custom carpet of Erte-inspired design direction in shades of platinum in the dining area and stone flooring in the pre-function area – polished natural stone in one area of blue / black granite, and a composite stone material featuring real silver with a matte / velvet finish in another. Both spaces use polished white Carrera marble as an inlay, offering a distinction between the arrival and balance of the pre-function areas.

Commissioned Art

To realize its vision and support the signature name for Portraits, PMAA tapped various sources for unique handcrafted pieces of art that sit harmoniously within the restaurant.

 • Norwegian Terje Lundaas, a world-renowned glass artist known for his magnificent color field abstraction technique, created two custom cobalt crystal vases and three clear crystal-footed vases for display in Portraits.
 • Two pieces of art were commissioned for the dining area – photography by Nathalie Edemont (known for her probing and provocative work) is balanced by an original creation from Nina Suriel (whose collage paintings explore womanhood and are elaborate, detailed-oriented and rich in texture).
 • Three bespoke crystal and stainless steel chandeliers were designed by Lalique’s teams in New York and Paris.

Furnishings of Unrivaled Caliber

Staying true to its vision, PMAA has sourced products of unrivaled caliber to create a venue where Portraits’ cuisine would be featured as distinctive art in an equally impressive space. Additional highlights include:

 • Seating (60-person capacity) for versatility as well as distinct pre-function and dining areas for private events.
 • Use of deep rich exotic Makassar Ebony wood with a high-gloss finish adds depth and warmth to the space with dots of Mother of Pearl accents throughout.
 • Draperies (soft white sheer materials, one with silver detail, offering sound absorption qualities) used for effect and function are a soft separation between the pre-function and dining areas.
 • Two sets of Shantung silk-like sliding door panels subdivide the dining area into two or three distinctive spaces allowing for concurrent private dining opportunities.
 • Indirect and direct lighting operated by a state-of-the-art programmable dimming system create desired moods depending on how the space is being used, plus battery-operated candle lamps by Lalique on each table convey the romantic ambiance.
 • A state-of-the-art sound system from Miami-based Technosystems is zoned for each of the three dining areas and pre-function space.
 • An Ebony Yamaha Grand piano is located in the pre-function area.
 • A portable maitre’d station is inspired by the furniture designs of Ruhlmann.

Tantalizing the Palate

An incredible culinary experience “brings the destinations to life” for Residents as the Ship sails the globe with regional menus featuring the best quality products from ports visited. Other specialty fare is flown in from all over the world by the restaurants’ chefs to accommodate Residents’ tastes and preferences.

The menu and overall dining experience drives an exhilaration of the senses achieved through smaller “amuse bouche” portions to encourage sampling of dishes, by using fragrance with a “table smoked” technique so guests feel as if they’re a part of the cooking process, and the placement of fresh herbs on the table that can be savored over the course of a meal. The restaurant also emphasizes the use of modern cooking techniques, creative and exquisite presentation, and developing dishes around the taste of one spectacular ingredient.

A Wine Lover’s Dream

Portraits’ custom-made wine vault accommodates 1,800 bottles representing approximately 800 labels in The World’s vast wine selection. While the Ship continuously circumnavigates the globe, the sommeliers use the opportunity to purchase locally many of the rarest and most sought-after wines and spirits in their countries of origin. The vault also contains wines from wine regions all over the world representing small boutique wineries that produce miniscule quantities. Using traditional and modern techniques, they apply tremendous attention to detail in their viticultural and vinicultural practices. Many of the latter are personal discoveries of the sommeliers and Residents.

Conduct business and catch up with family and friends from anywhere on Earth

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA – Working from home has become a way of life for many, and it’s easier than ever before, especially if your home is on The World, Residences at Sea. For Residents of the world’s largest privately owned mega-yacht, staying connected with business associates or chatting with family and friends is trouble-free thanks to state-of-the-art systems. Nowhere else can you peer outside your home office window to see a mother polar bear and her cub glancing back at you from a nearby ice floe one day while marveling at the Sydney Opera House on another. Staying connected and conducting business from the comfort of home, all while exploring the wonders of our planet, is easy on The World.

Internet, telephone, and broadcast services on The World allow Residents to conduct business and communicate with family and friends with ease from virtually anywhere on Earth. Whether it’s sailing the pristine waters of Antarctica, passing through Polynesia’s remote islands or navigating the beautiful Seychelles, staying in touch is only a call or a click away.

All Residents, guests and crew on board have unrestricted internet service with a robust Wi-Fi network that extends throughout the Ship. The World uses multiple satellite service providers including Starlink’s low orbit satellite services and is a first adopter of a state-of-the-art bandwidth management software driven by artificial intelligence. It is specifically designed for satellite connectivity and provides the best possible quality of experience and internet service availability. Additionally, The World continues to test new low orbit satellite technologies that will further improve the Ship’s internet connectivity.

For some Residents, knowing that they can host video conference calls, check email and conduct important web-based research from virtually anywhere on the planet from their ‘home office at sea’ was a prerequisite before purchasing a residence on The World. The Ship’s advanced technology helped to make their decision easy.

“I can run my company, attend board meetings and video chat with my parents who live in London all while I travel the globe,” says one UK Resident. “I’ve had conference calls in the morning and kayaked Norwegian fjords in the afternoon,” he adds. “While in Tristan da Cunha, the most remote inhabited island in the world that’s over 1,500 miles from the nearest port, I hosted a video conference with my sales team. It was as if I was in the next room. It couldn’t have been easier.”

Additional ‘stay connected’ benefits afforded by this unique and exclusive lifestyle include:

 • Home offices afford easy storage of important documents and business equipment, which is difficult to near impossible when traveling conventionally.
 • For Residents with international business contacts, The World serves as a convenient and fascinating venue for meetings, cultural experiences, and entertainment.
 • Two large conference rooms and a smaller private room feature state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment.
